PREVENTING WHAT WE CANNOT CURE: Physicians for Social Responsibility is the medical and public health voice working to prevent the use or spread of nuclear weapons and to slow, stop and reverse global warming and the toxic degradation of the environment. |
Message from the Chairperson
Western North Carolina Chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility is working for a world that will sustain present and future generations. Among our chief goals are the abolition of nuclear weapons and eliminating dependence on nuclear power. Recent events in Japan underscore the danger of relying on nuclear energy. We in WNC are particularly concerned in that we are at “The Nuclear Crossroads” of eastern United States. Several members of WNC/PSR recently testified at a hearing of The President’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Our Nuclear Future” in Augusta, Georgia. We expressed concern about a plan to “recycle” nuclear waste at The Savannah River Site in South Carolina. “Recycle” sounds good yet creates a host of problems. This is a special concern to WNC since much of the waste would be transported on I 40 and I-26. Additionally, there is a possibility that the Sandy Mush area in Madison County will be considered for a permanent repository of nuclear waste. We ask you to take two steps:
We meet on the third Friday of each month. We invite your participation. Thank you, Terry Clark, M. D., Chairperson, WNC/PSR
