Fukushima, An Alarmbell for Nuclear Power
Description of the massive release of radioactive isotopes into the environment and the unaccounted "hidden costs" of electricity produced by nuclear power.
Nuclear power plants come from the dreams of physicists striving to control a self-propagating nuclear fission reaction in seventy-four tons of uranium ore. The plants have now materialized as huge “slow” bombs always producing and immediately ready to release billions of curies of radioactive isotopes into the environment. Please wake up, everybody. Fukushima is an alarm bell ringing louder each day. Once the process is started, it cannot be stopped; in a nuclear reactor OR in a cooling pool OR in a geologic repository OR The Pacific ocean OR The English Channel OR in its ultimate product nuclear weapons OR in our bodies.
Japan’s nuclear power and financial problems have arisen from our own nuclear development. In the U.S., enormous construction costs are born by up-front consumer assessments and government “loans.” The cleanup of environmental devastation from mining, and uranium enrichment and waste “disposal” are all expenditures borne by the government. In an accounting of these hidden costs, 2/3rds of the real cost of electricity from nuclear power anywhere must be charged to the national debt.
The world cannot afford nuclear power and no peoples are secure from the many sources of radiation that it produces.
