The Author Philip Taubman, has been a reporter, an editor and a bureau chief (in Russia and in Washington DC) for Time over the last thirty years. He is now a consulting professor at Stanford University Center for International Security and Cooperation.  The book is the result of close personal acquaintances with individual members of the Partnership team, a track record of writing stories on defense issues (The Polk Award), and three years of in-depth historical research for this book, (brought up through 2011). The narrative is thoroughly researched and elaborately cross indexed.

Members of The Partnership are:

  • Henry Kissinger - Was a youthful German immigrant, became a brilliant Harvard professor (Nobel Peace Prize), Secretary of State under Richard Nixon.
  • George Shultz   - Princeton and MIT (Economics), Has held four different cabinet positions including Secretary of State.
  • William Perry    - Masterminded Cold War weapons (stealth, satellite surveillance, etc.) Defense Secretary under William Clinton.
  • Sam Nunn        - Georgia Lawyer, Prominent Senator (long term chair of the Armed Services Committee), co chair of the Nuclear Threat Initiative.
  • Sidney Drell     - Princeton and Stanford, detailed scientific expertise of nuclear weapons,  Policy and speech maker,  (Though a most effective author and speaker for nuclear abolition, he declined (modestly) to sign the the Wall Street editorials.)

These elder statesmen, each with their own nuclear perspective worked many months to construct their platform for the abolition of nuclear weapons.  "A World Free of Nuclear Weapons," was finally published by the Wall Street Journal on January 4, 2007. It stated the urgent need for abolition, the eight steps to be taken and the final ongoing universal verification that would be required afterward.

Support for the editorial, was immediate and wide -spread including Gorbachev, Sonia Gandhi, Colon Powell, Robert MacNamara, William Christopher, Madelin Albright, Warren Buffet, and James Baker (+++++). Foundations have have given substantial financial underwriting.  More editorials, TV interviews, movies, conferences, books and pamphlets have been produced by the Partners.

The Partnership has also worked closely with President Obama and the Administration's staff in arranging the Presidents April 2009 foreign policy speech in Prague, "For a World Free of Nuclear Weapons." and for technical support for the Senate in the confirmation of the 2011 Russian -American Start Treaty. Individually and jointly members  of the Partnership Team continue spreading the message of world wide security through the universal, controlled abolition of nuclear weapons.
