Dear Ms Fortiner,
I am the chair of Western North Carolina Physicians for Social Responsibility, and I am writing to share with you our concerns regarding the Pu PEIS.
There are many aspects that have not been fully evaluated. But to those of us in WNC an issue of special concern is the lack of detail regarding the transport of nuclear materials through our area. We live at the crossroads of interstate highways connecting the Savannah River Site in Georgia and the Y12 plant in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, as well as several nuclear power plants.
As members of the medical community, we are concerned about the potential for traffic accidents and radiation leaks. Our first responders have no training in how to respond safely and effectively to such an event, and providing proper care for people in this situation has not been addressed.
We believe an amended PEIS is necessary to reevaluate the radiation risks to the general public, the plant workers, the transport workers, and most especially the most vulnerable among us--our children.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. We stand against the restarting of the nuclear
arms race, but in any case, rigorous attention to all safety issues must be enforced.
