Let’s leave the nuclear option out

dot sulockMuch is always in the news about the danger of North Korean nuclear weapons. North Korea has few smallish nuclear weapons, less than 10. The United States (and Russia) have more than 5000 much more powerful nuclear weapons each, 1500 of which could be fired quickly by each. The International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War say that if those 3000 weapons are ever fired it will be the end of the human species. So it is the US (and Russian) weapons we should fear. Here are five things that we should pursue to remove the threat of United States nuclear weapons.

1 - Renouncing the option of using nuclear weapons first.

2 - Ending the sole unchecked authority of any U.S. President to launch a nuclear attack.

3 - Taking U.S. nuclear weapons off hair trigger alert.

4 - Cancelling the plan to replace the entire U.S. nuclear arsenal with enhanced weapons.

5 - Actively pursuing a verifiable agreement among nuclear-armed states to eliminate their nuclear arsenals

Let’s try give future generations the gift of life.
