Nobel Peace Prize for Nihon Hidankyo

No New Nukes

The Japanese nuclear abolitionists’ group, Nihon Hidankyo, who are hibakusha-survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945- received the Nobel Peace Prize on December 10 in Oslo Norway. Having been a candidate for many years one can ask why now? Perhaps the reason, considering the present state of our world, is reflected in the words of Jorgen Frydnes, the chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. “Nuclear weapons and humanity cannot coexist.”

We should also recognize the wisdom of the Nuclear Weapons and Arms Control Working Group in the current U.S. Congress, who have submitted a resolution to both the house and the senate – Smarter Approaches to Nuclear Expenditures Act-to reconsider deploying the latest ICBM-the Sentinel. This system is already way over budget and considered by scores of retired high ranking military officers to be only increasing the danger.
