Ira Helfand, M.D. Co-President, International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) Dr. Helfand delivered a presentation “Confronting Nuclear Weapons in the 21st Century” on Monday, December 3rd, 2012 at The Social Hall of The Asheville Jewish Community Center. The event was sponsored by The Western North Carolina Chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility. Dr.Helfand is co-Founder and Past President of Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR), IPPNW’s US affiliate. He has published studies on the medical consequences of nuclear war in the New England Journal of Medicine and the British Medical Journal. He has lectured widely both nationally and internationally on the health and environmental effects of nuclear weapons and nuclear power.
