PSR-N.C. Chapter Meeting 1/16/2026
Present: Terry and Brita Clark, Bob and Irma Howarth, Scott Mahan, Scott Baker, Dot Sulock, Bert Crain
December Minutes were reviewed and approved.
Treasurer’s report- Bert: Deposit-500 No debits Balance- 7282
CAN committee report Bert: Washington State PSR along with a consortium of others has posted 4 billboards in Seattle reminding folks that the New Start Treaty is expiring on Feb. 5th and that there were then no restraints on the nos. of nuclear weapons deployed by Russia and the U.S. Urged to call their congressional reps. There was extensive discussion of coming events: Bulletin of Atomic scientists are expected to move the Doomsday clock closer to midnight and the NPT review conference will be held at the UN in late April into May. Bert shall attend as part of PSR-IPPNW group of civil society groups.
Dot will be presenting a talk on renewable energy for the Sierra Club at UNC Asheville on the 1st Weds. in March. Dot brought a letter to all our congressional representatives, for signing, stressing the importance of accepting Russia’s offer to renew the 2010 New Start Treaty for an additional year.
Terry and Brita report on the PSR-One chapter leaders meeting. There is a movement to have presidential elections determined by the popular vote not the electoral college which our group will support.
Essay Contest: Scott B. reports that so far there has been only one submission to date. We will recontact schools about same. Scott M. suggests we open the contest to all high school students which was approved and a new flyer will be sent to all schools. Scott M. also suggested that we contact environmental science professors to bring more attention to the subject. Judges to date include Scott M., a climate scientist at NOAA, Scott Baker, John Stevens- a retired UNC faculty member and Stephen Wall a retired M.D.
Veterans for Peace is sponsoring a documentary, “Earth’s Greatest Enemy “today at 6:30 PM at UUC Church, 15 Overlook Place, Asheville.
