PSR Western N.C. Chapter - July17, 2026
Present: Brita and Terry Clark, Phil Bisesi, Dot Sulock, Bert Crain.
Dot brought a letter to federal legislators asking them to stop supporting the defense contractors building new nuclear weapon systems that are just increasing the danger. The senate armed services committee recently approved 2 new tactical nukes that the pentagon had not even asked for.
Treasurer’s report-Bert: Deposit of $150 and no debits with a balance of $2359.
Terry gave a PSR One report emphasizing that our country is having a resurgence of nuclear power, including SMRs-small modular reactors. Chapters should emphasize that this is a bad idea.
Brita wrote a letter to the NNSA-National Nuclear Security Administration-on behalf of PSR-WNC in response to their request for public comments on the PEIS (Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement) in their proposal to renew plutonium pit production. The focus was on concerns about increased transport of nuclear materials through our communities. The letter also emphasized our opposition to ramping up the arms race instead of honoring the TPNW.
Terry wrote a letter to the NNSA emphasizing the present lack of any arms control treaty and that our renewed plutonium pit production is endangering the lives of our children. He recently observed that a wild turkey mother seemed more concerned about her offspring than we are.
We tabled essay contest timetable discussion till Scott Baker was in attendance.
Bert reported on July CAN meeting: There is a pertinent new film released: The Vow from Hiroshima. A new coalition is being formed to protest the deregulation that is bringing radioactive pollution.
Phil B. told us of a new film “Nuclear Savage The Islands of Secret Project 4.1” revealing the effects of radiation exposure due to atmospheric testing in the Marshall Islands. This was recently shown by OREPA in Knoxville and he will bring more information to our next meeting.
Brita feels like we should have new leadership in our group and will ask Scott Mahan if he would be chairman.
We plan to gather at Pack Square on Sunday August 9 at 3 pm to commemorate the 81st anniversary of the bombing of Nagasaki. Will notify other groups to ask for cosponsorship.
Terry will send us info. to participate in an online book club.
Next meeting August 21.
