PSR-Western North Carolina Minutes 6/19/2026
Present: Terry and Brita Clark, Charles and Dee Mahan, Scott Mahan, Scott and Flossie Baker, Dot Sulock, Bert Crain
The minutes of 4/17/26 were reviewed and approved.
Dot brought a letter to congress for signing revealing expert psychiatrists’ call to remove Trump from office because of his increasing grandiose ideation and mental instability.
Treasurers report: Bert reported that we had a deposit of $1000 and debits of $6908 with a current balance of $2124.
We had a long review of the essay contest for high school students and the awards ceremony. Overall the ceremony was a stellar event and Scott Baker who had done so much work as well as Flossie in organizing the contest, from the beginning, as well as the event itself, expressed his appreciation for the other members taking up the slack, when he had an illness that prevented him from finishing up and attending the event.
Scott Mahan was congratulated on his excellent presentation on the increasing danger from infectious disease with global warming. It was suggested that we try to contact teachers early in the year notifying them of the contest as they may make it part of the curriculum. Scott M. suggested we decrease the dollar amount of the awards to make it more sustainable. He told us that one student was so interested in the subjects that he might start a student group in school. We will send our list of contacts to Scott M. for easier correspondence in the future. We will try to schedule award ceremonies earlier in the spring to avoid conflict with graduation.
There was no PSR CAN conference report given this month.
Terry summarized the PSR-1 chapter leaders meeting. He distributed a letter from UCS emphasizing that new plutonium pit production is unnecessary because of the risks and that new nuclear weapons are unnecessary.
Dot informed us of a Bill gates U-tube presentation emphasizing that nuclear energy was unnecessary to meet our needs and did not endorse a need for SMRs-small modular nuclear reactors. Fusion and renewables were important.
Charles and Bert expressed their concern with the possibility of Russia using tactical nuclear weapons now that Ukraine has brought the war home to Russia with drone attacks on St. Petersburg and Moscow.
Next meeting: 7/17/2026
