Minutes Western North Carolina Chapter PSR

-Attendees: Scott Baker, Bert Crain, Dot Sulock, Brita Clark, Terry Clark, Philip Bisesi, Sallee Detomaso, Robert Howarth, Irma Howarth, Lew Patrie, Lynn Patrie,

Unable to attend: Mary Olson, Scott Mahan

Welcome- Scott Baker, Chair

-Agenda approved

-Letter regarding nuclear weapons, sent to congressional legislators, prepared by Dot, signed by group

-Approval of Minutes of 10/20/23, with one clarification, the chapter approved a donation of $300 to National, related to the Health Heroes Awards Ceremony, Scott and Flossie Baker will make the donation with personal check and will be reimbursed the $300

-Welcome to Brian Campbell, new National Director of PSR

- Recipients of recognition awards at the Health Heroes Award event:

Tina Cordova, co-founder, Tularosa Basin Down-winders Consortium

Alan Lockwood, MD PSR, has shared his expertise in Climate Change

Barbara Gottlieb, Director, Environment and Health Program, PSR

- Report by Scott Mahan, regarding newsletter, submission of articles requested for next publication, Three MAHEC Resident Physicians have expressed interest in participating in the work of WNCPSR, topic of mailing lists reviewed noting we need coordination of multiple lists

-Plan Send articles for submission to Newsletter to Scott Mahan.

- Terry, Scott Baker, Scott Mahan, Bert and others will review and organize mailing lists

Position of the chapter on Nuclear Power, Leslie, Dot, Brita and Terry are finalizing the document and will distribute it for comment by chapter members, then post it on the WNCPSR Website and circulate locally and to National Office

- Program on “The Humanitarian Impacts of Nuclear Weapons and Signs of Hope for a Nuclear Weapons Free World” Presented Tuesday, 11/28/23, 1-2:30 PM by a distinguished panel of speakers, Organized by Mary Olson, founder of Gender and Radiation Impact Project and member of WNCPSR, held as a side program at the United Nations Second Meeting of the Member States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons

Plan: Register on line to attend in person or via Zoom, registration link available at Gender and Radiation Impact Project, (GRIP)

-Uranium Film Festival, Planned for March 2024. Progress in planning reported.

-Cherry Tree Planting Slide Show prepared by Leslie, will be posted on website

-Report on PSR Committee on Abolition of Nuclear Weapons, Bert reported on the most recent meetings. Great concern over wars in Middle East and Ukraine

- Letter has been sent to President Biden urging him to send representatives to 2nd Meeting of States Parties to TPNW.

-Structure of the WNCPSR Chapter, Terry introduced a discussion of the benefit to having quarterly programs as well as conceptualizing our monthly chapter meetings as board meetings. The group discussed and there was general agreement on focusing on adding programs so as to engage a broader participation of attendees.

Asheville Holiday Parade, report that the organizers of the Asheville Holiday Parade dis invited “The One Planet Coalition” as “too political”

- Other remarks:

Scott notes that common symbol shared by various anti-nuclear groups could be helpful

Consider lessons from Vietnam War protest, (such as a movement can take a long time to accomplish goals)

-December 15th holiday pot luck and brief business meeting at the home of Dot.

Terry Clark
