PSR WNC Chapter Meeting December 14th, 2024
Present: Scott B, Brita and Terry C., Lynn Patrie, Irma and Bob H., Dot S. Mary O. and Bert C.
The meeting was held at Dot’s home prior to a holiday social.
We shared remembrances of Lew Patrie, whom we recently lost, as a good and grand person and dedicated, persistent antinuclear activist. We will miss him. Lynn advised us there will be a memorial service June 14th which is flag day.
Dot brought a letter to all our congressional representatives for signing. The letter emphasizes the costs, danger of and need to stop the ongoing deployment of The Sentinel ICBM system.
Treasurer’s report: We have a current balance of $5183. This balance is after we forwarded to the ARC $3500 of charitable contributions that had been sent to us for hurricane disaster relief. We also received $225 specifically designated for humidifiers that will be forwarded to a local charity.
Brita reported on the chapter leaders’ meeting. There will be an environmental oriented meeting in Washington in March. Mary Olson will be a presenter at the States Parties to the TPNW at the UN in March.
We discussed the presentation of the Nobel Peace Prize to Nihon Hidankyo, the eloquent presentation by the chairman of the Nobel committee, the beauty of the ceremony and the importance of the award.
Bert reported that the mood at the last CAN committee meeting was somber given the current world events. PSR executive director Brian Campbell attended and reported on two meetings he attended: The Alliance for Nuclear Accountability in Atlanta and another meeting in Virginia. The importance of local grass-roots activism was stressed. The Doomsday Clock resetting in late January and The Meeting of States Party to the TPNW at the UN, March 3-7, present opportunities to heighten public awareness of the dangers of nuclear weapons.
We discussed H.R. 9495, which is seen as an attempt by house legislators to deny 501 C-3 status to not for profit groups that hold views contrary to the administration.
Next meeting Jan. 17th.
