Minutes WNCPSR February 16 2024

I.) Minutes 1/19/24 Terry read minutes aloud, reviewed and approved as written 

III,) Treasurer’s report, Bert, balance $3,399.05 as of 2.15/24 

IV.) -letters: Dot circulated a letter to 18 congressional representatives emphasizing the dangers of relying on deterrence as a strategy to prevent use of nuclear weapons. Signed by all attendees.

V.) Report by Bert on the meeting of The Committee on The Abolition of Nuclear Weapons: noted that HR 77 now has 44 sponsors, the danger of ICBM’s in mid-west silos serving as a sponge in case of an all out nuclear war, noted the availability from Bob Dodge of the calculation what each US City and each taxpayer sends to the IRS in support of nuclear weapons. This is good information to share with the public at tax paying time

VI.) Resolution submission to Democratic Party. Bob Howarth shared a resolution he will submit to the Buncombe County Democratic Party requesting they resolve to cut back on the unnecessary expense of nuclear arsenal and allocate those monies for domestic needs as well as support the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and then pass request on to state and national.

VII.) Update on Uranium Film Festival, Leslie and Dot. Dot Distributed a list of films that will be shown at The Uranium Film Festival on March 23rd and 24th at The Reuters Center at UNCA, Asheville. Members had voted on their preferences which Dot tabulated. The combinations and order of showing films were decided.

Publicity discussed. Need to notify Asheville Citizen Times, Community Ca lander, Mountain Express and others. Terry will contact Director of OREPA to notify of the event and possibly to speak at the event. Brita volunteered to arrange snacks, coffee and other with help from Leslie, Irma and possibly Flossie. Dot will bring banana bread. Bert asked Leslie if there are requests for reimbursement of expenses and Leslie will request such when she has them.

VIII.) Upcoming events:

- Climate Change Working Group and Happy Hour at home of Scott and Beth Mahan this evening.

-Uranium Film Festival 3/23/24 and 3/24/24 details pending. And will be posted on WNCPSR Website 

-PSR Information booth and plant give away at 5 K Run on 4/20/24, confirmed that she can submit expenses for reimbursement for plant supplies. Notify Scott Mahan if you will attend the event and help staff the booth. The plant give-away has been very popular at events and provides an opportunity for PSR members to share our concerns about Climate Change, nuclear weapons and other issues.
