Bert brought a letter to N.C. congressional members for signature stressing the increasing risk of nuclear war and what course our nation should take at this dangerous time.

Bert will have a LTE published in the Charlotte Observer marking the 80th anniversary of the Trinity bomb test stressing the danger and futility of missile defense.

We agreed to hold a vigil from 3-5 pm on August 6-Hiroshima day. Terry will explore the possibility of another event elsewhere on Aug.9.

Bert reported on PSR CAN Meeting 7/08;

 H.R. 317 awareness was stressed. A WHO study on the impact of nuclear war is being done and should be helpful. A companion bill in the senate for H.R. 317 has been introduced. The rising nuclear danger seems to be more prevalent in the popular culture.

Brita and Terry reported on PSR-1 leaders meeting. The push to recruit younger members was stressed.  The climate crisis was discussed including Brian Campbell’s talk on longer term effects of heat exhaustion.

On Sun. 20 July two state representatives will attend a meeting to discuss the effects of medicaid cuts on N.C. To be held at Friends Meeting House, 233 Edgewood Ave, Asheville. This is sponsored by The Ethical Humanists of Asheville.

Bob Howarth advised that OREPA is sponsoring an extensive program the first week of Aug. to emphasize the 80th anniversary of Hiroshima. We agreed to send $100 to recognize their work.

Scott Baker had expressed interest in sponsoring an essay contest and Terry reported that PSR Sacramento, Ca. sponsors a very good one. Their theme was “How to make a difference in the world”. Terry reported on a Northwestern professor who has researched how to communicate with local politicians. Terry will notify Veterans for Peace and Bert will notify The Democratic Socialist Party of Asheville and Ken Jones of the August 6th vigil

Next meeting August 15th.
