PSR Western North Carolina Chapter Minutes

The minutes of 4/11/25 were approved.

Dot brought a letter to all our federal legislators and executives for signing. It stressed the importance of getting rid of ICBMs as a steppingstone to total nuclear abolition, and particularly the waste of money on The Sentinel system. Scott brought a letter to the president stressing the danger and exorbitant cost of Sentinel.

Lew Patrie’s Celebration of Life will be Sat. 6/14/25 at 11 AM at Unitarian Universalist Church, 1 Edwin Place, Asheville with a reception to follow. We will donate 250 dollars to OREPA in remembrance of Lew.

Treasurer’s Report: Bert reported a balance of $5253.

Bert reported on the CAN committee May Meeting. H.R. 317 has been introduced in the 119th congress stressing the importance of adopting the provisions of the Back from the Brink movement. H.R. 100-(Senate R.61) which stresses the importance of continued diplomacy to prevent an arms race was also discussed. We also discussed S.192-to restrict the first use of nuclear weapons.

Reminder: Veterans for Peace has a protest gathering every Tues, evening 4:30-5:30 at Pack Square Park.

Scott Baker had a conversation with Chuck Edward’s staffer Madeline Lehman and asked her to advise the congressman to not support the Sentinel ICBM.

There will be a public comment opportunity 5/27 and 5/28 regarding a nationwide NEPA

(National Programmatic Impact Assessment) re. the environmental impact of producing more plutonium pits. Online training via zoom 5/22/25, 4;00-5:30 pm by Nuclear Watch New Mexico.
