North Carolina PSR-Western N.C. Chapter 4/11/2025
Present: Brita and Terry Clark, Sally T., Phil B, Mary Olson, Scott Baker, Ellen Thomas, Dot Sulock, Bert C.
Terry read the minutes of the last meeting and they were approved.
Dot brought a letter to our executives and congresspersons for signing, which Brita had written. This letter stressed the folly of deploying the new ICBM, the Sentinel.
Terry, Brita and Scott commented on the social gathering celebrating the blooming of our cherry tree in front of city hall.
Brita published a letter in Mt. Ex. on recovery from the hurricane.
Everyone reported on Hands Off Rallies they attended last weekend.
Treasurer’s Report: we have a balance of $5,183.
Bert reported on the April CAN committee meeting. Rep. Foster introduced H.R. 100 and Markey and Merkley introduced SR 61 calling for negotiations to prevent an arms race. Milwaukee, Wis. has endorsed a BftB resolution. Resolutions have been brought to the Rhode Island and Mass. State legislatures. Ellen Thomas related that rep. Norton has again introduced H.R. 1818 calling for nuclear weapons abolition. The nuclear weapons cost calculator is available on the PSR-L.A. website. 110 billion is the nuclear weapons related cost for 2025.
Terry and Brita reported on One PSR chapter leaders’ meeting. We continue to try to set a good example and to attract youth to our movement, with some success.
Mary Olson gave a report on her work. She attended the third meeting of States Party to the TPNW and presented her work for UNDIR-United Nations Institute for Disarmament. This paper stresses the disproportionate effect of nuclear radiation on women and girls.
We did not discuss but should meet again on May 16.
