WNCPSR-Minutes  8/15/2025

Present: Brita and Terry C., Irma and Bob H., Scott B., Phil B., Sally T., Scott B., Bert C., Charlie M., Dot S.

The minutes of 7/18/25 were highlighted and approved.

Dot brought a letter to all our federal legislators and vice-president outlining the horrific effects of a nuclear war and asking them to stop the deployment of the Sentinel missile.

Treasurer’s Report-Bert: We had a 70-dollar deposit, debit of 100 dollars and balance of 6098.

Bert commented on the 8/12/25 CAN national meeting. It was stressed that our primary purpose is to make everyone aware of the greatest public health threat. There really does seem to be more public awareness and a willingness by newspapers to publish articles that they would not print previously. The Charlotte Observer published 3 very good op-eds, intending to give a warning, within a 3-week period before August 6th, stressing the danger we all face.

Terry reported on the PSR-1 leaders meeting that denoted the rules on lobbying. As a 501c3 group we cannot endorse any person or political party.

Several reported on our August 6th Hiroshima vigil. Brita passed out some 50 plants and many young people were very receptive to and thankful for our message

We briefly discussed fund raising and considered the possibility of contributing with a QR code instead of a check.

Terry and Bert will inspect our WNCPSR website and consider if improvements are necessary.

Scott Baker brought a proposal for a high school essay contest focusing either on climate change or nuclear weapons. Dot seconded the proposal and it passed with no objections. Scott will chair the project, but pointed out that we will need several subcommittees, and “all hands on deck”. The timetable was set for a January 2026 start, finishing at the end of the spring semester. We endorsed Scott’s leadership in this project and agree that he may decide details as they come up.

Scott requested that members email him any suggestions they have regarding the framing of the proposed essay topics.

Next meeting Sept. 19th
