Present: Terry and Brita Clark, Sally T and Phil Bisesi, Scott Baker, Leslie Poplawski,  Dot Sulock, Bert Crain

The minutes of May 16 were approved.

Dot brought a letter to congresspeople for signing stressing the cost and futility of the proposed “golden dome” missile defense.

Treasurers Report: Deposits of $1050, Expenses of $75 and a balance of $6208.

Lew Patrie’s memorial was well attended, admiration for him was expressed and a lot of peace and justice advocates showed up.

Bert gave a report on the monthly CAN committee virtual meeting.  H.R. 317 has 20 cosponsors and we will try to get more to sign as well as senators to introduce a companion bill in the senate. It is the 80th anniversary of the July 27th Trinity atomic test and the august bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This anniversary can be used to amplify our message. Our primary focus is to always work on the elimination of nuclear weapons. The futility of and wasted resources on “golden dome” missile defense was discussed and related to the current failures of Israel’s “iron dome”. Scott commented on the gaping incongruity in the devastation that would result from a failed “golden dome” as opposed to the “iron dome”.

Brita and Terry reported on ONE PSR meeting. There was a focus on doing everything we can to get young people involved. A Midwest teacher and social worker recruited aspiring medical students by advising them that PSR work would be a bonus on their required resumes when they applied. Scott emphasized that we simply had to recruit younger folks. Dot pointed out that Highland Brewery is a good place to have an event to attract younger folks. She will work on an event such as a movie. Scott will explore the idea of a high school essay contest.

Terry and Brita reported on The Extreme Weather People’s Hearing held 6/18/25 at Highland Brewery. This was a well-attended event focused on the impact of Helene on WNC. Emphasis was on the planned decrease in EPA funding for environmental protection and varied pollution. The Climate Action Campaign which is a strong group sponsored and PSR cosponsored. The National Resources Defense Council was also aware and posted the event. Next meeting 18 July.

We talked of our individual experiences in becoming PSR activists and nurturing adults were usually involved. Next meeting July 18th.
