Present: Brita and Terry Clark, Bob and Irma Howarth, Sally T and Phil B., Charles Mahan, Scott Baker, Bert C., Dot Sulock
Minutes of previous meeting were approved.
Treasurer’s report: No deposits or expenditures for balance of $6098
Brita reported that fund raising requests had been sent out and she was commended on her request letter.
Bert reported on the 24th IPPNW World Congress in Nagasaki which he attended. There were 400 attendees from many different countries including 15 from the U.S, many from Europe as well as from India, Australia, Africa, Canada, Central America, and of course Japan. It was a remarkable event and Nagasaki Declaration of 4 Oct. 2025 can be accessed at ippnw.org.
Bert reported on the last 2 CAN committee zoom conferences. The importance of BftB was stressed. Scott brought up the movie A House of Dynamite soon to be out. This was also discussed at CAN and apparently will be terrifying and an opportunity to push nuclear abolition.
Many of us will be participating in No Kings Rallies 10/18 and feel that the partisan political climate has become more toxic with possibility of violence.
Scott and Charles gave an update on the essay contest. Things are going well: posting in schools and beginning to select judges. Gala will be held in April at UNC Asheville venue that Dot was able to secure free of charge. The topics of essay can be: Why do we need to abolish nuclear weapons and how do we start? or How do low-income and socially disadvantaged communities disproportionately experience the effects of climate change? The essay committee will meet again Nov. 13.
Terry reported on a company that manufactures SMRs-small modular reactors-that was forced to leave Wyoming for Oak Ridge, Tenn. Details can be read on Beyond Nuclear website.
Nuclear Weapons and Radiation: Health Risks and Advocacy Training is an online Zoom course being offered beginning Nov. 3rd-registration closes 10/31. Details can be accessed at psr.org.
Next Meeting 21 Nov.
